What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the premium option for replacing missing or heavily decayed teeth. Your dentist or oral surgeon will gently place slender titanium screws into your jaw to provide a permanent, sturdy foundation that will then be topped with elegant porcelain crowns that look, feel, and function like real teeth. Once the process is complete, you’ll be able to smile with confidence and even bite and chew again!

The Implant Process

The dental implant process often takes roughly 6 months. However, the results can be spectacular — and once placed, the implants themselves are permanent.

Depending on the health of your jawbone, you may need a bone graft before your dentist or oral surgeon can place your new implants. This helps to make sure that your jaw is strong enough to support the implants successfully.

During this step, your dentist or oral surgeon will gently insert slender titanium screws called posts into your jawbone. These replace the roots of your missing teeth and serve as a foundation for crowns or bridges.

You’ll often need several months for your jawbone to fully mesh with the newly placed implants. Don’t worry — this part takes time but it isn’t painful.

Once your implants are fully integrated with your jaw, your dentist or oral surgeon will place titanium abutments on top. These serve as a connection point between the implants and the crowns that will go on top.

Finally, your dentist or oral surgeon will place porcelain crowns on top of your implants. These will look and function much like real teeth, and will give you a beautiful new smile!

Why Dental Implants?

Dental implants don’t just restore the appearance of your smile but give you back the ability to bite and chew. The sturdy porcelain crowns look and feel like real teeth, and can be customized to create whatever appearance you want. Plus, dental implants are durable — the implants themselves typically last a lifetime, while the crowns will only need to be replaced every decade or so.
