Tooth & Jaw Pain

Tooth Pain Isn’t Normal

For some, tooth and jaw pain is a regular part of life. Many are late to visit the dentist when they’re in pain because it’s become so routine. We’re here to tell you that tooth and jaw pain isn’t normal, no matter how long you’ve been living with it. In fact, the longer you’ve been ignoring it, the more likely it is to turn into a full-on dental emergency. At Greene Street Dental, we can reduce your symptoms and treat the underlying cause.

One Concerning Cause of Tooth and Jaw Pain: Abscesses

If you’re experiencing the following symptoms, you may have an abscessed tooth:

  • Pain that shoots from the tooth to other areas of your face
  • Swelling in the cheek, jaw, and into the throat
  • Difficulty chewing, talking, breathing, or swallowing
  • Foul, salty-tasting liquid or bad breath
  • Nausea, fever, and vomiting
  • Bleeding
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold

Abscesses most often occur due to infection in the tooth. When decay is able to infiltrate all the way down to the roots, it develops into a painful, swollen sac. Infection that has reached this stage can spread.

Don’t wait to see an emergency dentist if you have symptoms of a tooth infection. If the infection spreads, you are at serious risk of Sepsis, a sometimes life-threatening health condition.

Other Common Causes of Tooth and Jaw Pain

If you’re experiencing pain that isn’t severe enough to merit an emergency visit, then you may have another condition. Here are some other possible reasons for your tooth and jaw pain:

  • Small to moderately sized cavities
  • Injuries, especially if you suffered an impact to the head or jaw
  • Gum disease
  • Temporomandibular disorder (TMD)
  • Bruxism, also called teeth grinding or clenching
  • Worn enamel or receding gums (resulting in sensitivity)

Treatments for Tooth Pain

There are many possible treatments for tooth pain, depending on the primary cause. Our general dentists can conduct a dental checkup and exam to determine if you have a condition that can be treated at the office. Here are some of the treatment options we may offer:

Whatever the treatment, we will perform your care with kindness and diligence. Our dental professionals have trained in many unique areas, so we have experts in root canals, oral surgery, and more working on your teeth.

Treatments for Jaw Pain

Treatments for jaw pain may overlap with your tooth pain treatment. However, some unique causes of jaw pain require special treatments.

We offer custom dental-night guards to take the pressure off of your teeth and jaw while you sleep. If you’re experiencing symptoms of a TMD, we can also prescribe several sessions of injectables to reduce pain and inflammation in your jaw.
